Capt. Herman has a long history of sail starting on Glenwild Lake, Bloomingdale, NJ where he sailed sailfish at a young age.He taught sailing at a camp for youth in Bear Mountain , NY, frostbite sailing in Marmoreneck, NY, many years of cruising in the Tampa Bay Area. He formerly sailed “Dragonlord” , a C and C Corvette and some years ago secured “Whitewing”, a Freedom 40 cat/ketch.
He also taught many Tampa area residents the joy of sailing. Racing and cruising to Key West, sailing to Cuba, and also a cruise/race to Isla Mujeres. adventure!
Having left Tampa for a lifelong dream of sailing the Caribbean, Herman enjoyed time in the Bahamas, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and a few years in St. Thomas. He felt that a short visit would not allow him to come to know the people of each cruising port.
Prior to Irma and Maria hurricanes , Herman decided to sell s/v Whitewing to a friend . Both boat and captain needed some help . Unfortunately, Whitewing was lost in Irma’s 220 mph winds off Water Island, St. Thomas. Sad day like losing an old close friend.
Herman is now back in Tampa and enjoying friends and family. He misses the island life but plans to visit old and new friends in exotic places.
Ever need info on the local sailing scene in Tampa, feel free to contact him. He can often be found at his favorite place, Davis Island Yacht Club.
